Hello Gardening Persons, I will be needing help from you all, as I probably know more about nuclear fusion than I do about gardening, and I am gradually converting a fine crop of hillside bracken, super brambles and noxious weeds, plus vast amounts of self seeded Sycamores and gorse into a garden. The land is very poor, a few inches of grey dust over (in places) many feet of sand, so the challenge is considerable! On our small Island good topsoil is more valuable than gold. Greetings, Sinclair2.

Hi Sinclair2 and a warm welcome to this great site.

How big is your garden, what is the location, etc, and could you post a few pictures please? I can't help you but there are plenty of other folk here who can and will and a bit more information would help them to help you.

If it was up to me, I'd keep some of the bracken as I love it, also a bit of the gorse and perhaps a tree or two.

Hi Sinclair and welcome. Sounds like your garden is quite a challenge with poor, sandy, well drained soil. If you get lots of sun in the garden, it would probably suit lots of drought loving mediterranean plants like rosemary, thyme, lavender, sages, anything with silvery, grey or hairy leaves. Also small leaves like olives and callistemons.
    Good luck with it [IMG]

Thanks to all for your welcome. Perhaps I was being a bit gloomy in my intro, I have already achieved quite a lot by way of landscaping(steep sloping site) terraced and patio immediately behind the house (which is split level to suit the site) and a lot of the advice I will need will be more specific - planting, growing etc. This summer is being taken up with major refurbishment of the house, and probably replacement of the old softwood windows - c . 1974 and now fit where they touch! More detail as and when, and pics if I can master the way of posting them, first reading made my brain hurt. Nice forum and people, thanks again, Sinclair2.
