We have recently moved into a bungalow with a garden which is about 12m x5m and are preparing the soil for a lawn. What a hassle as the soil is more of a clay substance and forms lumps. In additon, there seems to be a lot of broken stones as if from builder's rubble.
There was a lawn there previously but it looked as if it was crab grass lawn and of course the ground was very uneven. We rotavated it to break up the soil and are now removing and breaking up the lumps and trying to get it reasonably level.
This is after removing several trees which had been planted willy nilly. Unfortunately a vine was allowed to grow wild and it was up in three of the tress plus it is a like a mat on the ground. The rotavator only just managed to chop it up but now the proble is removing the bits and pieces as we would like to have a veggie garden where the trees and the vine were located.
I was thinking of getting some top soil in but we would require about 2 tonnes at £49 a ton to give a layer about 10cm deep, but the issue is then removing all the existing lumpy bits first and then spreading the new soil. This is too much like hard work as only one of us can really do the gardening, so i guess we will have to hope that once the lawn takes root, the lumpy bits will disappear.
Look fowward to getting some advice as and when available.
