This year I have decided to get into roses so my first 3 roses have been purchased and planted, now instead of asking all the beginner questions I would much prefer if someone could possibly recommend a good book, I'm looking at the basics such as deadheading, pruning and feeding etc

Good evening Ninhydrin (interesting chemical user name) IMHO I could recommend a 100 good books,I personally think that contained in this Rose forum there is the complete book you are looking for,it has a threads covering first hand rose growing and caring problems, diseases of in fact everything appertaining to Roses, and all the Rosarians at Gardeners Corner are to help, from the past to now, plus the images on here are second to none and are true colours,my advice for what its worth is to browse through this Rose forum thread by thread, there is nothing in any book that is not on here.it takes up no room, and you would make some new friends and it wouldn't cost as much as a expensive hardback book (if you make a voluntary donation ):phew:
Sorry about that I get carried away about this Forum and Gardeners Corner:heehee:

If you still want a book recommendation I respectfully suggest a used book "The Rose Expert"by Dr. D.G.Hessayon
Other Rosarians friends here might have different book recommendations and will post their thoughts also:)I do hope that I haven't gone on to much but I just love Roses;)

This little book is the only one you will need, most garden centres stock it and it covers every aspect of growing roses.

No it isn't just coincidence, I would think it likely that most rose growers own this little book because it is so useful on all the basics!! :)

It's a funny thing Val, but I only own one gardening book, the Readers Digest A to Z Encyclopaedia and that's purely a reference book. I don't really know where my gardening knowledge has come from......some from my mum I suppose, but I'm mostly self taught. :)

Good evening Ninhydrin well first I would decide what Roses you really like Hybrid Teas,Floribundas ect the colour, what will suit your garden, their final position, amount of Sun they will get and rain and wind,I always place mine in their pots(or if bare root place them in an empty pot) and then walk all over the garden at looking from different view points, please take your time my friend, that Rose you put in could be their for 20/30 years;)

When you have decided on the Roses ,then you can start on your quest,Best price,I favour local rose sellers as I can see what I am getting.and I can take the Rose home with me,nothing wrong with mail order, but some Roses don't travel well, and it helps keep your local grower's in business, just my own personal preference:)

            Roses grow on you;)
