I laid new turf last week after first laying 4-5" of quality top soil.
When the top soil was laid I rolled it using a very very heavy concrete roller.
The top soil was very firm when I laid the turf.

I have been watering the new turf for a week and its starting to root down into the top soil.

My problem is that I put my foot on the grass today and I sank down by about 1" leaving my footprint in the top soil underneath.

What shall I do as if I start walking on it soon its gonna be really un-level.

    Thanks

It sounds like the lawn is water-logged, Skymagic. Probably best to stop watering and I dont' think you had better walk on it for a week or two. If you do have to cross it, try putting some boards down first, but don't leave them in place for long or the grass will go yellow underneath them. Grass is very resilient so be patient and you'll have a lawn to be proud of.:thmb:

I'm no expert on laying a lawn, but I do know the base needs to be firmed down well, before the turf is layed.

I'm not sure using a roller is the best idea, the old tried and tested method was to walk in very small steps over the whole area, only that way can you actually take up the soft spots.

I agree you could be overwatering, time will tell I think.

Reduce the watering but do not stop it as you still need the turf to take. - unless you want to take it up, re-roll and lay again.

It would seem to me that your base of soil was very dry and no matter how much you rolled it it would be different when it had some moisture content.

What would I do? Leave it to see how it works out and the use a lihgt roller to go over it - rolling in several different directions.. Check out the effect - If it doesn't look too bad - top dress and over-seed in the Autumn to iron out any small hollows
