Here's an extract of an article from Amateur Gardening Magazine:

"Top Garden celebrities will champion Britain's rich gardening heritage as The Great Garden Revival returns to TV screens this week.
The ten part series which made it's debut in 2014 returns to BBC2 from Tuesdays to Fridays at 7pm. It will see leading lights from the world of Horticulture campaign for a revival of elements of gardens which have fallen out of fashion. Threats such as the paving of gardens for parking will be brought to the attention of the Nation.
Presenters will include AG's Christine Walkden and Toby Buckland. In each episode two presenters will focus on and endangered aspect of gardening which they feel passionate about. The Beeb is promising "hands on practical advice for viewers" Topics set to be featured includes Knot Gardens, Peonies, Daffodils, Bog Gardens, Lavender, Wild Life Gardens, Climbers, Soft Fruit and Irises.
A BBC spokesman said "Nationwide, more people now have paved patios in gardens than those who have trees. It all adds up to a crisis unparalleled in our history, massively increasing the risk of flooding. With five million homes at risk and uninsurable in places , paving our gardens will only make things worse. Only five per cent of rainwater in paved urban spaces is soaked up. The other 95% is run off, which overwhelms drains"
The BBC added "The rapid and sustained loss of our private green spaces is also having a dramatic effect on birds and butterflies. Startling numbers have fallen from an average of 15 per garden in 1979 to just three in 2012. Mistletoe Thrush has declined by 28% and house sparrows have fallen by two thirds in the same period.
BBC commissioning editor, Linday Bradbury, promised TV viewers that the series would "fuse together top tips, nostalgia. and an unparalleled team of passionate presenters"

I agree, went back to the road where I grew up and all the front gardens have been paved over for parking, old Mrs Smith would be turning in her grave if she could see what they'd done to hers

Yep, I agree too, Ziggy. Luckily, in my small Grove, no one has paved over their front gardens. One neighbour has put Welsh Slate on the front and then planted in dwarf shrubs and Ericas' but it hasn't affected the drainage and always looks good.:coffee::snork:

Sadly there's more hard landscaping round here that 'soft' and everyone wonders why their gardens flood:doh:one neighbour has removed every tree and shrub as he doesn't like gardening..each to their own...but he's just made his cause worse IMO:rolleyespink:

I might watch it depending who the presenter is.
I think Ground 'Farce' has a lot to answer for.

Mostly front gardens are paved in order to park cars.
So its not something your going to change, unless we stop buying cars.

Most people want a very low maintenance garden anyway these days so the two go together, add a few containers and that's it, all done.

Maybe if the paving was designed in such a way that the run off went into a soak away?
But that would cost more to construct.
My house was built in 1947 and and all the rain water just goes down the sewers.

In modern houses often the back gardens are so tiny you only need 10 slabs for a patio, so not much you can do there.

I drove past my old house a few weeks back. When we moved into that house, the front garden was like a land fill site, full of old junk and rubbish. I transformed it and won prizes every year in the local "In Bloom" competition, including several firsts. Unfortunately, everything has been ripped out and its a garden full of shingle now.

Me too. Half an hour of Chris Beardshaw or even Carol Klein is too much for me!

The insurance companies haven't helped as they put your premiums up if you have a tree nearby.

I have been watching. I loved the first episode on roses as they were in my town. Made me want to pop along to nottcutts and the second half was joe swift on climbers so gave me something to post on social media so people know what to grow up my crochet trellises.

the tree thing bothers me alot. My neigbours removed all but two trees from their back garden this year that included a lovely rowen, a holly, a fir tree of some description, a row of 3 firs, and 4 trees along the back along with a whole hedge of yews, a whole hedge of holly and a whole hedge of privet. They also took out all the plants apart from a rose and a weigellia that intially they werent keeping and said i could have but i stupidly told them what it was so they kept it.

They did the front garden in the same year and removed every single plant in it and it was filled with roses and shrubs and they took down 3 trees

I would of taken all the plants off them if i had known as the neighbour before was a passionate gardener. Would of saved me a fortune and i would of got loads of strawberry plants as well.

All they have done with the space is the driveway is gravel and the back garden is lawn. Thats it.

It makes me very very very sad. I get that people arn't gardeners and want minimal to do but that doesnt meant no plants!

I felt so guilty when i took out the massive tree at the end of the garden that was far too big for the space. The stump and root ball broke a digger pulling it out. There were a few dead trees next to it that also came out but i have planted 3 fruit trees and a camellia that im going to leave to grow into a tree rather than a bush. So i feel better knowing i have increased the amount of trees now. And the only plant in my garden was a rosemary when i moved here now there are far too many to list.

The wind has been horrible this year though now nextdoors has removed all the trees im amazed i have had no damage.

P.s. Sorry for typos have tried my best to correct but very sick today so bare with me sorry

Ive got one of those moved in over the back from me - they have systematically ripped out all the mature hedging, trees & ivy on the boundary for no good reason that I can see & put down lots & lots of gravel (without any membrane so Im expecting an outbreak of excessive weedkiller this year ) - now the wind blows unhindered & the wildlife has nowhere to hide until the stuff Ive planted my side matures. Hopefully they will get bored & move on before I loose my cool..
