I have 2 vacuum cleaners both cylinder types which I prefer. 1 is a Dyson (so so and was expensive) and a Vax 2000 which was really cheap, and was very good until my husband emptied it and managed to bin the filter at the same time:rolleyespink:. I didn't realise until the dust collector needed emptying again by which time loads of muck had got into the motor:wallbanging:. I bought a new filter but the vacuum has never been the same since and unfortunately I think I need to get a replacement for it.
I would be very happy to get exactly the same model again but can't and to my horror I read that the EU has put some kind of limit on the power output of vacuums and it's somewhat less than my 2000 watt machine.
Any recommendations please. I have quite a big house and 2 moulting cats:). I also live in the countryside and lead an outdoor style life so no cream carpets except in the spare room!
As I am getting somewhat passed it I don't want anything too heavy to lug upstairs. The Vax I have is a "midi" size which is really handy for whizzing round collecting cat hair...almost daily. I have both carpet, wood floors and vinyl.
I have always heard good reports of Henrys but never had 1 before. They would be a bit bigger than my current Vax but maybe not too heavy? I don't really feel the need to have 1 of these battery types as don't have any issue with storage which is maybe where they come in handy.
So if possible something not too big or heavy but will "take the skin off a rice pudding":).

We've got Henry and Charles, we used to have Dyson but it was to noisey, one thing with the henry it has a long elecy cable and a switch for high and low suck (not sure if it's on the new one now) very please with them and will buy another if one goes bang
They are a bit heavy but you can get a smaller one Hetty

Only draw back with them is there's no place to store the tools on the machine

You can use them with a bag or not

Look in the back of a builders van and you may see Henry

I know nothing about cylinder cleaners Silu but my ex landlady swore by the Miele she had. Yes, they cost a bit but she said it was worth every penny. :)

I've used a henry type at work, and they work well for picking up wood dust and brick rubble.

But I'd never buy one for home use, I've got carpets:lunapic 130165696578242 5:

We have a Miele which was a recommendation from mother in law. The suction is great, my wife can only use it a
On 3/4 power else she can’t push it across the floor due to the suction. We had a Samsung before, total rubbish.

Thats the part of the real question, though they have limited the electrical power a vac can use, if they now have a more efficient motor design then they can still produce the same or even better suction.

Its really down to individual makers as to how good the performance is.

If you look on the manufacturers or big sellers sites you can see their specification figures, think this is the key one is AirWatts aW.

We bought a VAX upright a couple of years ago and it's the best vac we've ever had. Loads of suction

Many thanks all for your useful information and recommendations. I will wait for the January sales and hopefully get something which will do the job well. I used to have a Miele dishwasher which was excellent but the price was not excellent at all:). It sounds like it's between a Vax which has been good until the mishap, a Miele depending on how the bank balance is looking and a Henry. With 2 moulting cats there is zero point in me getting anything which isn't powerful.

This doesn't make sense? Because you use a Henry for commercial clean ups you would never use one on a carpet at home?

It does to me - they are tough as old boots, and will happily suck up rubble, grit and dust all day long and leave a solid floored area looking quite clean - they don't have sufficient suck (in my opinion) to do a really good job on carpets, as they will only really lift the stuff off the top and not the stuff that is down in the fibres.

@silu - Miele or Dyson would be my recommendations. Dyson get some stick because they are made of plastic etc, but they come with a 5-year guarantee, and as long as you clean their filters etc regularly they continue to suck like......... well, a Dyson!

? I disagree about the Henry. We have one and have to turn down the power on half our carpets because it sucks so hard we can't push/pull it along the carpet. It's an excellent domestic cleaner for the whole house and used by a huge amount of homes

Glad you are happy with it :) - I don't wish to do them down, as they are really well made wee machines, I just have never been impressed with them in a domestic or carpeted situation.
