My veg beds are in need of replacing. I had slightly raised sections made with 8" round posts laid lengthwise but they have rotted and I want to perhaps rearrange the layout.

Given durability I was wondering about other materials for building the raised beds. Has anyone got ideas? I started looking at plastic wood boards but that's as far as research has progressed!

Composite shed panels are relatively cheap i think and they're not designed to rot... failing that you could get some oil drums and find someone to cut them in and sink them into the ground. Circular veggie beds could look pretty cool :)

If you've got money, RSJ's would work and they'd be heavy enough to support their own weight. I remember seeing some on eBay the other day. If you got them to size, you wouldn't have to worry about angle grinders either.

I understand that all of my ideas are probably useless, i just think out of the box most of the time ha ha

When I made my raised beds, I used 8"x2" tanalised wood, not cheap, but looked as good as new after 7 years of use. Of course, as with any treatment, there are health concerns, so it's a judgement you'd have to make. I'm still here though :)

Railway sleepers are very popular for making raised beds.

You can either get untreated hardwood ones or tantalised softwood ones. Softwood is much lighter and usually much cheaper. Recycled ones are easily good enough.

there are lots of companies that do them and a Google search will bring up more than you would want to bother looking at.

      Here's one, at random

Thanks all, will look into the suggestions when I get a moment to scratch etc

Quite like the idea of circular beds but obviously not great for maximizing space.

Will try to get a plan of the space together so get some suggestions on new layout too
