    Hello everyone,
This is my first crack at growing vegies in the garden. I have just moved into a place which already has a nice garden so I'm already starting to feel the pressure of looking after it. Behind the main garden was a bit of waste land that was used for dumping coals and fire ash. I've levelled it all out and put some fertilizer pelets down. I've also found so large railway sleepers which I've used to mark out the beds. Am I doing everything right so far? The soil is very dark and powdery and i dug all the ashes in as I was told that this is good for the earth. Does this sound like the right type of soil to grow vegies?

Well done Buttercup...if it's Woodash rest assured you never have slugs nibbling at your vegies, lol as long as it's not all just ash,but dig it in deep and mix well with soil, maybe some sand or peat /peat substitute would not go amiss,if the soil is too dusty. You should have saved this fertiliser for your vegies, not the weeds as well. Railway sleeper make good divisions, I use to collect or save old carpets, cut down into strips, put them down inbetweeen rows, and no weeds were growing there, could pick vegies in my slippers , lol.
