:help:Hi I am a nebie to both this forum and gardening in general. Having just brought my first house in Hertfordshire I am at a loss at what to do with my first garden.

With the garden being on an upward hill I have some lawn but mostly raised decking and no plants (yet!) I would love advise on some plants that are LOW maintenance.

Oh I also need to gain some privacy on either side as the fences are very low - I guess climbers, but can these be planted in pots??? Any advise, hints, tips would be good.

    Thanks

    Hi and welcome Stonebear!

I personally find that the lowest form of planting is a few shrubs with tightly packed perennials in for the majority of the colour throughout the year. Because they are tightly packed, they supress the weeds better, and they only need major attention once a year, to prune down before when they die down, which is when I put a good layer of mulch on them.

As you are living in Hertfordshire, I'm wondering what soil you are blessed with! (I lived in various parts of East Herts for 10 years or so, and had a mix of heavy clay, flint and gravel!)

As a fairly newbee on this forum, I'm sure that there are other more experienced people who can advise you more!

    Hope this Helps!

Hi Stonebear, Welcome to GC, loads of friendly helpful people on here and youo will be inundated with suggestions.

For the first year I suggest you sit out in it and enjoy it. It gives you the opportunity to observe how your garden grows.

Chance to work out it's aspect -S,N,E or W facing, check out what type of soil you have-as already mentioned, and wait and see what may possibly alreadt be there just waiting for Summer before it rears its head.

    Get yourself a perch, observe-it's work really-research.
