If I have a 1 1/2 foot large hole which is clogged with water..and i now want to build it up to lay grass...can someone please let me know how?

Would i get some sharp sand, compost, small stones ( shingle - for drainage perhaps? seeing as this hole is literally like a pond and wont drain..even if i build it up by a foot will that help? ) , top soil and then grass seed.

    Is this correct?

Im thinking, throw back in some sub soil, throw on top of that some shingle, then mix sand with compost perhaps, then top soil mixed with more compost, and finally seed.

Any good...please advice more than welcome..at a loss here.

You have an 18 inch hole in your garden, yes? Is it 18 inches deep or 18 inches across? The obvious thing would be to fill it with soil then seed it. But, something tells me there is a bit more to the story.
