Heya, I'm BastLoki (please call me Mal!) and I've been gardening on and off for the past decade - off due to my health, on because I adore fresh veggies and fruit too much to not want to make my own :) I like it best when it's organic, as well.

Anyway, my probelm is this: I'm thinking of raising one of my side beds to move my beloved food-plants out of their containers and into something a bit less scruffy-looking (I can't really afford those huge planters, so I tend to use rhino tubs with holes punched in the bottom ^^;;), but my equally beloved rambling rose ( I think it's a rambler, anyway - Danse de Feur?) is smack-bang in the middle.

It's been growing there for nearly as long as I've been gardening, and it's two or three times my size, and fearsome with it's thorns, so I don't really want to move it unless I have to.

Basically, will dumping a foot or so of compost soil on it's lower stalks do a lot of damage, or will it survive being worked around?

    Thanks for your time!

[IMG] Mal I think you have to make sure the graft onto the rootstock and the point from which the branches originate is always at soil level not below as this I think increases the risk of rose die back.. Could you build a little wall around the rose plant 1st so the soil level stays the same for the rose.. You could use slabs perhaps to keep the soil back & it is then inside your raised bed but still at the original soil level.. Just a thought but I expect someone else will have a better answer.. :sunny:
