    Option one:

If they want total low maintance then id excavate, compact 3" of type one then two inches of golden flint. Some planters with bulbs/ bedding plants to brighten it up. Note no membrane as its crap and the gravel migrates down it.

Option two excavate slightly then 3" layer of bark again no membrane, closely plant with heathers rodys etc.

    Hi Spud,

What about planting with euonymous-I have a large patch now about 4 yrs old and nothing can grow through mine-I`ve tried. Pretty cheap aswell, and there`s nowt up wi`bein` a skin flint. I`m quite proud of being tight!

Its really poor soil mostly subsoil infact i think the main reason she wants cheep is that the wall down the side there may be nocked down (and it may take half the garden with it ) as all but her house and 2 otheres in the street are going to be nocked down next year ........

Flippin eck-sounds like the kind of houses I have lived in in my past. Mind you the not falling down part just goes to show you-redrow don`t make them like that and those estates are popping up everywhere.

Don`t envy you your job one bit.
