    [​IMG] Just seen these little dears in local pet shop,what are they?
    I think their name began with d.
    They look like rats.

    Hi roders,
    I think they are gerbils, although this macro picture makes them look like tigers...
    Gerbils are kind of desert rats, if i remember right. They can bite if you really mishandle them, but first you have to catch them!! The tail is very powerful and most people would not like the experience of holding a gerbil.
    I would personally prefer an iguana...

    surely too nice looking for rats?
    a niece of mine had a chinchilla once & it was alot more furry. could be young ones though.
    they look lovely.

    what do people on here think of pet shops?

    These cuties are Degus [​IMG] bigger than gerbils, and friendlier. I don't agree with pet shops, as it makes pets seem like they are not as much of a commitment as they are (and don't get me started on ill informed workers mis-sexing animals and ending up with pregnant ones going out to inexperienced owners!). The only animal I ever bought from a pet shop was a heavily pregnant guinea pig who I didn't want to go to anyone else. She's now very happily on of our harem, after giving birth to tree lively babies (who all went t new homes) [​IMG]

    Yes they are degus , I saw some on the BBC 2 programme `Wildlife Park` the other day.
