I don't know if I mentioned it here but a couple of months ago when I was up in the yard two airgun pellets hit a tree about 5 yards away. The shooter was unlikely to be able to see me although I wasn't creeping about quietly. When I shouted he beat an hasty retreat. I thought it would be a good idea to phone 101 so that the police were aware of the event. Christine has just told me that there was a charge for that call.

In the United States a man took his new wife out to restaurant soon after she had been attacked in an attempted rape. She was lucky enough to strike a lucky blow and the attacker finished up under arrest in hospital. Unfortunately their waiter at the restaurant turned out to be a mate of the injured party and made a scene and was promptly dismissed by the owner. When the couple left the restaurant the waiter had collected a 'friend' and there they were with baseball bats. The husband warned them to advance no further, they ignored him and the waiter was shot. The husband was arrested but all the witnesses supported him, he had a 'carry permit' and was soon released. The gun was evidence of course but, because of the risk of further activity, it was quickly returned to him.

Thank goodness we aren't allowed "to own guns" with or without a carry permit:smile:

We had a Duck shoot (hope not now have we had words) at the bottom of the garden, then there was a duck hitting the roof and falling on to the patio right by the back door, so we picked up the duck (dead) and took it back to them and mention the rules about shooting near houses and next time the police will be phoned

If any one shoots into your proberty phone the police, if some one is shooting on your land with out your say so then it's Armed Trespass but i could be wrong

Gun laws are strict here, and it is illegal to discharge a firearm within (I think, but would need to check) 500 metres of a property inhabited by humans. Even that IMHO is not enough when some hunting rifles will bring down a wild boar at that distance.

Airguns are to be banned in Scotland this month. Seems like another PC over reaction to me especially as I can buy loads of explosives in any supermarket from Nov-Jan. ?

Guns are only designed for one purpose. Shame our American friends are not intelligent enough to understand this.

When I was younger, and I could still see straight, I always had a liking for shooting.
Never owned a gun as the restrictions, along with living in the town, were just too much bother.

But would have liked to try my hand at clay pigeons or target shooting.
Never wanted to kill any thing, not even a sparrow.

To say guns have only one purpose is a bit OTT in my opinion.

Now if your thinking of the odd Kalashnikov being sold over the counter, yep, that is way out of order.

My X-FIL owned a gun shop (years ago) and offered to teach my new born son how to shoot when he was old enough. I was aghast! But, as he rightly pointed out: guns don't kill people; people do!
How about knives? ... should we all retreat back to using a toddlers fork and "pusher"? :dunno:
                        How about cars?

All the other potentially lethal things you mention are made for other purposes. A car is not designed and built to kill as efficiently as possible. It can kill, either accidentally, through stupidity, or even deliberately. But it is not designed for that.

A gun has no other use except to kill or attempt to kill things. Therefore anyone who chooses to keep a gun is in fact choosing to accept that they might one day deliberately take a life. Not necessarily a human life, and not necessarily in hostility. For example a vet might legitimately keep a gun to end the suffering of an injured animal. But no matter how you look at it, keeping something that is only built to kill can only mean you are prepared to kill something or someone for whatever reason.

A gun is designed to put metal on a point that it is directed at, be it target, animal or human.
It does have uses, and sometimes people use them for the wrong uses.

Its more a matter of getting the nutter locked up before he gets a knife and kills someone, that's what counts, if he has a gun, then I hope there is someone else there with a gun that can stop him, instead of coppers throwing milk bottles, like was shown in a newspaper many years ago, before they were allowed to have a few armed cops over here.

I dont think the two cretins that attacked Lee Rigby were carrying guns.
But maybe if someone in the area was, there would be two less for the taxpayer to look after for the rest of their lives.
