I bought a small David Austin 'Tess of the d'urbervilles' rose bush earlier this year. I had to keep it in a container due to poor soil in the garden and lack of space to plant. It was in a small container to start with, but I moved it into a larger half barrel, hoping this would give it enough room to grow. It has been looked after, well watered, fed and I have added a couple of layers of well rotted manure since it was re-potted. It seems to have done well and has flowered nicely and grown quite a bit. I have tried to train it to a trellis on the wall. It has recently given an unexpected small group of about 5 close together flowers which look and smell lovely. This looks like the final before winter. I am a total newbie gardener to say the least, so what do I do with it now? Should it be cut down/pruned? I am scared of cutting anything!

Here is a pic of it as soon as it was re-potted.

    This is it today.

Good evening Julie, indeed a beautiful Rose,Tess of the d'urbervilles' (Thomas Hardy) it looks absolutely fine to me,Can be grown as a shrub or a short climber,I personally would not prune it until it at least 2 years old as you are growing it as a climber:)You should be proud of its healthy condition and how you have cared for it my friend,if you have any more questions, don,t hesitate to ask, there are so many knowledgeable Rose members here.

I have read that climbing roses need to be pruned at the end of october .... I pruned a few today in a garden that I worked at (but they had grown totally out of hand)

bush roses get pruned when forsythia bloom, then can get pruned again later in the year if they go rampant

        I'm still learning though?

Hi Dim no climbing Rose should be pruned until it is at least 2/3 years of age.:)

          Age

          Wiseold

Is this the age/amount of years since you received it from the nursery ?

I have two climbers, and three Standards, due to arrive Mid November from David Austin

So it is TWO Years from me planting them ?

            thanks, I never knew that

luckily, these were planted more than 2 years ago and are on a trellis which is mounted onto a home office wall .... the office is a single storey detached building (bungalow)

in the past few months, some of the stems grew nearly as tall as the roof, so yesterday I cut those back (I read somewhere that crawling roses need to be pruned at the end of october)

I have not tied/fanned them to the trellis yet, as there is also a jasmine crawler that grows inbetween, and that is still in leaf ....

so will wait a few more weeks until the jasmine looses it's leaves, and I will then tie the new rose stems to the trellis (there are 2 david austin climbing roses -a red and and a yellow, plus 1 jasmine officiale crawler in that area)

Thank you all so much for your help and advice. I took another close up pic of the clustered small bunch of flowers produced recently. The flowers look good to me with no signs of desease. They smell lovely too! Hope the pic is clear enough for you to appreciate as much as I do.
