Cherry tomato , seeded at the end of March
    [IMG]
Hardy hibiscus seeded at the beginner of March
    [IMG]

You know this has given me heart. Sorry. Is just my first year with a garden, and nothing is growing in my garden apart from hydrangeas and my hedge. There's not very much to grow in the first place as the borders were bare when I moved in. I was starting to think the previous tenant had placed a garden curse on me. But no, it's just a crappy summer and even people who proper garden are having trouble. I feel encouraged! :p

This is unfortunate but reassuring news , that most others plants are struggling . Some of my plants have flowered , but I still have a lot of green ! To top this I have also had poor germination this year on some seeds . Rust wiped out all my salvias and thunbergias , and to top all this I think the Slugs n Snails have been far more numerous this year. We are doomed! Doomed , I tell you !:gaah:

PS ; If you want a laugh view my post on the garlic crop later today !

worked at a garden yesterday that I landscaped from scratch

ferns, hostas, the lawn, acers, huechera, hakonechloa macra auerola, fatsia, palms, honeysuckle, star jasmine, clematis armandii apple blossom, mock orange, sambucus, acers and a few more are looking very healthy and growing strongly .... weeds are growing even stronger

Musa Basjoo, T-rex, alocasia mayan mask and ricinus have stalled and show very little growth in the past 2-3 months ... they look ok, and think that they will grow rapidly if (and when) the temps get higher than 20 degrees C

About what I've noticed as well. If it likes cool and damp it's doing pretty good. If it likes it sunny and warm it's just sat there sulking. The slugs are HUGE this year.......

I've been using the blue slug pellets (rainproof) since mid Feb .... There is not 1 hole in any of the hostas (there are 10 large leaved ones), and I have not seen 1 slug/snail in that garden (it's a small garden ... approx 100 square meters)

I think that things are slow everywhere but they seem to be picking up now. The temperature has risen, even though it's been wet, and I'm quite heartened that the runner beans are now starting to grow like mad.

I planted the first lot out in late May and they seemed to be doing very little but managed to get to about three feet high by the begining of last week. In the last seven days they have shot up to well over 6ft and are flowering. The ones planted out later are much slower so they seem to need to get a proper foothold first before shooting away.

There's also a noticeable difference between those grown through weed inhibitor plastic and those just in the clear soil. The warming of the ground that the plastic causes has certainly made a difference.

courgettes have also been slow and only produced male flowers until this week. Then, on monday, baby courgettes appeared (only the yellow variety) and look as though they will be ready to pick tomorrow.

Having nights that the temperature doesn't drop too low has certainly made a difference.

Sal, I notice that the compost that you have the toms in is the new stuff made up of loads of coconut fibre. I'm not sure I believe the manufacturers that say it improves water retention and crop yield. I've been trying some of it and it seems to dry out much too quickly. I've gone back to the other type.

My trees, shrubs and hedges have grown amazingly compared to the last two years (when we had bone-dry Spring months). Flowering things are a bit delayed though.
