My neighbour's son came round earlier asking if I had a soil pH meter he might borrow. He'd arrived to take his elderly Father to some gardens for the afternoon, but rather than just admiring the plants and thinking that he might buy some for his garden, he takes a pH meter with him and checks around the grounds before making his way to the inevitable 'Gift Shoppe'. (There may be many things in my handbag but pH meter hasn't been one of them - until now!).

It's a good idea, especially if you are visiting outside of your local area. Here, any gardens I visit can be almost guaranteed to be either growing on chalk (The North and South Downs) or clay (everything in between!). Unless one goes south beyond the Downs then you hit the sort of soil gardens dream for :)

If your handbag is anything like mine, the only thing not in it is the kitchen sink, lack of room see! Perhaps we've just found the perfect excuse (as though we needed one) for a new handbag??

Don't forget to include a radiator key, Ken Bruce always has one in his pocket.

Indeed - my husband got stopped at the train station on his way to work a few years ago, after a camping trip. His swiss army knife was still in his rucksack, and the only reason they let him off was because he also had a few tent pegs and the kids top trumps in his bag, evidence of a family camp!

I still tease him for being stopped under the terrorism act! :D
