Yesterday I spent a longish session planting out some little cabbages. I dug the soil over, carefully removing any weed roots, tilled it down to a fine tilth, raked it to a level taking out any surface stones, set out my plants, installed fibre collars as a precaution against root fly, mulched up to discourage the weeds, set up a frame and netting to deter the pigeons, and finally puddled the plants in with a shot of maxicrop to get them off to a good start. I was just musing how the rain would have settled them nicely when it hit me. Aaargh. No slug pellets!

Phew! Just got back from an emergency slug pellet run, and I'm happy to say they are looking fine. Thanks anyway.

:) Did you remember to compact the soil after digging? Cabbage don't like loose soil - just treading around the plants will do.

Er, no. I was hoping a thorough watering-in would do the same job, by making the soil flow a bit.

Not doing an emergency compacting run then? :) Its more a problem with sprouts and broccoil because they stand over winter theres more time for the wind to loosen them upsetting the root system.

:hehe: Well it's all mulched and netted and pegged now. Panic fatigue has set in. They'll have to take their chances now.
