Not THAT kind of community service!

    Honestly

Where I work, we're encouraged to do volunteering to aid underprivileged areas.

So I was offered a choice of either going to work as normal or going to Telford to create a garden at the William Reynolds infant school.

    Tough Choice [IMG]

    Here's the school

They had invited David Bellamy over in the summer to plant a tree on the understanding that we would come along later and create gardens for them. A team of people from Fujitsu, HSBC and Ricoh got together and we made 3 little gardens in one day.

    Here's 'before images'

This is the area that my team worked on.

We were to remove the turf, add compost, sow meadow seed and plant climbers against the fence (All provided by local nurseries etc)

This one is to be a sand pit, track, bridge and herbs.

This one is to be gravel with planters

    More to come...

Sorry about the current lack of photos, my website has gone down for some reason

In fact everybody with Virgin Media has lost their website. Should be fixed soon.

Hooray! I'm up and running again!

Next we stopped for lunch, kindly provided by the school. We perched on teeny little chairs with the kiddies

And then it rained/hailstoned/cloudburst and we all had to run for cover.

By now, we had realised that we'd left out a seriously important part of the planning. What to do with the mountain of turf we'd accumulated. We ordered a skip but as there was little access to the back of the building, we had to barrow it all round to the front. We also had 2 tonnes of gravel arriving later and were going to have to barrow that round too. Then one of the ladies on the project got on the phone and managed to sweet talk a local company into lending us a digger. Which she enjoyed driving.

Finally at half past 5, we had finished which was great because by then it was dark.

Here's our little meadow area with plants up the fence.

    The play area.

    The planters

A good time was had by all and the school were chuffed to bits.

They're hoping to get David Bellamy back again when the garden's established and invite us along too.

    Huzzah! [IMG]

Thanks all. I'll let you know if we get to go back and see it again.

In the meantime, here we are in the Shropshire Star

Just love the sandpit area Nurse When and the little track I can't imagine any little boy or girl for that matter who wouldn't want to play there!

Hi Nurse When, you have done a good job there, I expect that the children will be very pleased.
It makes it much easier to be in a team when it comes to the digging ! it must also be fun!

It was a lot of fun working in a team. We mixed the teams up between the three companies, so we were all meeting new people.

I would have asked for more, but the lunch we got was buffet style which was great as it meant we could nip in during the afternoon for a snack. They also laid on tea, coffee and biscuits.

We were very well looked after. [IMG]
