If you don't wear thick gloves when handling them you'll find out soon enough! The spines are extremely sharp and painfull and the ends will break off leaving painful bits in your fingers.

It's the complete opposite this year!

Wallnuts are very early and plentiful, as are Hazelnuts, but there's something wrong with the local Chestnuts as they are soft, hollow, shrunken and withered despite all the recent rain [1].

We've been collecting Wallnuts and Hazelnuts for weeks now ...

And they're virtually all but finished now. Collected the last few just before a local 'wild foraging' (£100+) course was held and saw the tyre tracks of whatever they were being transported in going past the bare Walnut trees.

They also appear to have travelled along the hedgerows we stripped of Blackberries and Elderberries before they finished several weeks ago, plus we nicked all the apples from the planting scheme in the car park where they would've parked, and they also missed where the Puffballs were this year (although they also finished some time ago).

[1] They appear to have checked out the Chestnuts, but found them defective as mentioned above

They were also too late for the Dewberries (if they made it that far) and maybe even struggled to find Sloes as the hedges with them in were cut last week.

I tend to think that when you get those "empty" chestnuts it is probably down to pollination.

I was thinking the weather was pretty good at pollination time this year so was thinking they could be good.
Not seen any near ready yet around here though.

Although the Walnut crop has been very good, quite a few of those have been empty and without kernels.
