Stupid auto correct. I meant that the leaves look a bit like an Oak tree. The trunk is the colour of coffee with lots of cream and is smooth with little white specks.

Any other features @CanadianLori , flowers or young fruits.
For some reason I'm thinking Maple of some kind or birch.

Unfortunately I wasn't curious about the tree until today but I don't recall seeing any flowers or keys on it.

I'll pay attention from now. I also think @wiseowl is onto something there. It looks like the pics of a type of fig tree that is hardy enough to survive here.

Yes, the one called White mulberry looks about the closest to me, or the fig pics I checked out.

I will take pics of anything that shows up to further help identify this fellow.

            Thanks again everyone!

It looks too thin for a fig leaf, and white mulberry is not a tree I've seen, lots of black mulberry around here.

It's the one they grow to feed silkworms with Pete, the black one which is quite common here was basically a failed experiment...

I dont think White Mulberry gets enough heat to do well here, summers are too cool.

For some reason that leaf shape sparked off an old memory in my mind, and I was thinking sassafras, (I know its not), its something that we don't seem to be able to get hold of over here for some reason.
I've just ordered some seeds from the US.
Maybe it doesn't grow well over here, but worth a try.

Seen Sassafras growing in UK ..it suckers.
I would treat with caution unless you have masses of space.
I love the interesting leaves. SASSAFRAS ALBIDUM 03-07-2014 15-57-15.JPG SASSAFRAS ALBIDUM 03-07-2014 15-57-38.JPG

I know it does grow here, i was fascinated by the leaf shapes when reading about it years ago, but I don't think it's particularly common.
I also think it colours up well in Autumn.
If it suckers it can try to out compete the Tetrapanax,
