    Hi Folks,
A few years ago I made myself a raised pond, only 4ft X4ft X 2ft deep. I bought six little goldfish, about 1" long, they have thrived and look healthy and are about 3" long, in fact I found a new one this year that I didn't know I had, he/she is dark grey and now about 1" so they must have bred.
5 of them are what I would call a normal fish shape, however just one has bulbous eyes, seems well enough. Is this a type of goldfish? in other words normal. I know there are some odd looking ones about.
    I'm not worried just curious.

Fred young goldfish are usually a grey/olive colour but colour up as they get older ,the fish in your picture looks like a fancy goldfish breed called a celestial.

So, since you did not buy this one it must have been delivered by the stork.

I was gobsmacked I tell yer Shobhna, a stork would have difficulty getting to my pond, too built up, unless it dropped it from the clouds. lol. No sign of anything untill he/she got to 1". Same this year they have been going through their courtship, spawning ritual, no sign of any young yet. Trouble is my tank is black, ok to see the red ones but anything dark could go missing for months.
I thought someone had been unloading their tiddlers on to me, the price of upkeep being what it is. lol.

Yes, water-garden FRY is perhaps an unfortunate term for them, who knows though when they get big enough.

You laugh at the idea of a stork delivering it but it could be a fry that has been ilicited from a neighbourng pond and just by chance the heron or bird that struck lucky elsewhere lost its grip on it and it so happened because he was caught up looking at your bigger fry!!

As far as I know Moyra there are no ponds nearby and the only bird that might have dropped it could be a Kingfisher and I'm not that lucky that I would have one diving into my little pond. LOL. Too built up for anything larger.
No I think it's a young one from a couple of years ago maybe. Untill last year my pond was a bit murky, hence no sighting of it.
An early pic of the pond.

Couldn't it just be a throwback from the other goldfish breeding?

Lovely pond by the way :)

Yes Kalmia I do think they bred while the water was murky and I never got to see the little ones before they were eaten and only this one survived.

Thank you for your comment, though only small I get lots of pleasure from it.
    Here it is:-

Talking about odd fish... many years ago when I first started keeping fish, I had just golden Orfe and Koi, the Golden Orfe being a bit prone to problems in water, quickly went to the fishy heaven, but the Koi soldered on. One spring I noticed a lot of small black fish, which at first I took to be babies, but to my horror turned out to be mirror carp, from whence they came I know not, but they are the bain of my life as they interbreed with the Koi, and are outstaying their welcome. I have found homes for lots of them, but it's like trying to stop the tide !!!!

Thank you, I know it's only a small thing but I do get pleasure from it (better than TV) and I'm quiet proud that after buying a decent pump/filter/uv thingie it looks clean and the fish healthy at the 3rd year.

It was built mostly from "Aquired" materials, only the 2nd hand tank cost me £25. I had to bung up the drain hole with the cork top from the Spigetty jar but all went well.
