Oh dear my little lawn is ruined ,and it is my own fault.

my elderly dog can no longer go on his long walkies as his back legs will not allow him too any longer , so i felt sorry for him and allowed him over the past few months to have more roaming in the garden.

at one time he was allowed only to go on the part of the garden on the concrete by the house, but i let him go on the lawn as well by leaving the little gate open so he could wander round the rest of the garden, and now the lawn is a mass of yellow patches everywhere.

i think the lawn is dead
    :(

Don't worry - I think your dog is more important than your lawn!!!!
We had our garden landscaped 3 years ago and spent £1,000's!!! We had a beautiful new lawn put down - but have a girl dog (their wee is more acid, so I'm told). Because I am a busy working Mum and have to get the kiddies off to school and me to work in the morning - Bramble doesn't have a morning "walkies" and last thing at night, if husband is out, I can't take her to the grass verge at the corner of the road, so our lawn is dreadful!!!! I was mowing it on Saturday and lost count of the bare patches and it is sooooooo bumpy........... but wouldn't swap doggy for the world.... :wuvu: Now - the kiddies and hubby ........ their position in the house is negotiable!!!!! :hehe:

I've allowed our dogs, when elderly, to use the main lawn too. Lots of brown patches, but the grass quickly recovered in the spring.

If you can be bothered chuck some water on the lawn when the dogs pee - to dilute it.

:lollol: Oh Honey Bee you have me creased up here... :D We do have to let our pets have their way sometimes....:hehe:

May, I have been there, & bought the Tshirt too... :D Kristen is right though if you chuck a bucket of water on it it helps to dilute it & green will satart to appear again eventually... It will come back though it is tough stuff... Just enjoy these days with your old dog still enjoying life, you can get your lawn back later...:thmb::D

Hi May I watched a old how to be a gardener program yesterday and according to Alan Titchmarsh if you can put water on the spot straight away it will dilute it.

Is there nothing you can put on the lawn that is non-toxic to both plants and animals, that could soak up most of the wee before it gets into the roots? I don't know of anything personally, just putting the idea out there.

yes i agree, my dog is more important than the lawn, especially as i dont know how much longer he will be with me:( he is now 14 and those back legs are getting weaker by the day , but he is still a happy chappie and in his mind he still wants to go for his walkies but he just cant do it now .

i must admit i thought that it was only the she dogs that made the grass yellow , but it seems the male dogs also do it .

i was hoping that would happen but the rest of the grass round those large yellow patches is growing around them so it doesnt seem to be growing .

i wonder if different sorts of grass react in different ways ,because when i used to take him for a walk he always used to go in the same place on the grass for years ,and the grass in that place is still as green as it always was, yet on my lawn all it took was one time and the yellow patch was there.

I reckon it will recover, bit early for that to have happened as yet, so I would wait a while. Better if he uses a different spot each time, of course, and if you can put some water on.

If you need to tidy up the lawn you could lift some turf from a less conspicuous part, and remove the bits that are brown, but you will then probably have to re-seed the area that you stole :) the turf from

I was taking mutt for a trot around the block this evening when I thought exactly what you have May - WHY DON'T THE GRASS VERGES EVER SUFFER FROM DEAD PATCHES!!!!????? :hehe: They have loads of dogs weeing on them around here all the time and always look so much healthier than our lawns do!!!
I also read recently a good tip is to sow seed trays with grass seed, then you have ready made patches for your dead bits!! Great idea - I will be doing some this year for sure!! :)

I walk my dogs down the park and there are no yellow patches down there either just on my lawn! It's got me wondering why now. There are loads of dogs that go down the park.

    Hope your dogs ok May
