Hi all I have nearly reached the end of clearing our second plot and have found what was once a corridor of raspberries now my question is; When is the best time to dig out and remove all the old wood and reset the canes that can be saved?

Autumn I was thinking would be the ideal time when the plants would have died down some what but I really would like to have a go now. Will it work do you think? Hel.xxx.

I wouldn't disturb them until the autumn, if you want a crop next year.

Are you moving them, or just sorting them out? If you are just sorting out can you chop out the ones that have "wandered" away from the line, and just leave the ones that are in the right place - because they will crop nicely next year.

summer fruiting raspberries have fruit on the previous years growth, so if you are just wanting to thin the plants out you can cut the woody stems down to ground level and leave the green stems in situ, cutting out any that aren't in the line you want (As kristen has said above).

If you are moving them from where they are to a different part of the plot, I think I'd wait until autumn although I dug up some 'runners' and my mum planted them this time last year and she's had fruit, only a few though .( she has them in pots so that maybe part of the reason)
