    Hi everyone,

Any idea's why my olive tree isn't producing? It looks great but alas no Olive's forming this year.

It is pretty well established, 8 ft tall and in a sunny but wind sheltered site. Everything growing well around it but tree refusing to co-operate :(

I think that olives will always be a bit iffy in the UK, lets face it a few years back people would have laughed at the suggestion of even growing the plant outside here.

Question ... have any of you had edible olives? I would be very surprised if you did because they can be iffy here.

Mmmmm, love them stuffed with pimentos (the red thingies) but not with almonds, garlic, snails and other vile creatures ... :D

They taste vile here when picked off the tree and you have to do a water soak every day for eight days ... that's changing the water every day I might add ... and they can still taste vile ... the black ones on the tree attacking our kitchen wall are such. Our friend has green olive trees and they are large, fat and delicious.

For those who don't know ... there are black olive trees and green olive trees. [IMG]

Olives stuffed with snails!!!! Oh my God, how revolting.

I am so picky about buying my olives here, they have to be firm particularly kalamata. Give me some green ones stuffed with garlic and I'm in heaven.

    LOL/pete/t&o,

I must admit i hate olives, if i am given anything to eat with them on i actually pick them out :D

I only have it for sentimental reasons really but it is just nice to "see it do its thing" [IMG]

I know that you have to temper them if ya going to eat them anyway but olives, kumquates and pomegranates remind me of times gone by......... she goes off into her own little dream world.......... [IMG]

A garden centre locally is selling the trees complete with a little bottle of oil said to have been made from that type of olive and I always look at them.

Having said that they are on display in the indoor plants section, I always imagined that in this climate (certainly Scotland) that they would have to come into a conservatory for winter like citrus trees. Very pretty trees, I'd definitely have one if I had a conservatory or even better a stately home with an old fashioned orangerie!
