Did anyone else see the article in the Guardian Newspaper today ( guardian.co.uk/climatechange ) referencing Professor Wangari Maathai, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004. She has started a campaign to plant 1 billion trees next year, as part of the effort against global warming.

Here is the link to the campaign's website: www.unep.org/billiontreecampaign

It catches my imagination because I have a small ambition (and small is the operative word) to re-establish wild pear trees - Pyrus Pyraster (Pyrus Communis) - in our valley in East Sussex. (I can bore for Britain on this - so I'll save that until someone really wants to know). I am pledging my 4 pears that I have grown from seed - 3 and 4 year olds - along side 4 Quercus Robur (3 year olds) which are being planted out this month.

Any one else want to plant a tree? Doesn't have to be in your garden - how about at your church, or an apple tree at a school? Convince your super market to let you replace some nondescript shrubs with a tree - be creative! Lets see what we can contribute. As the website says, 1 tree or a million, it all adds up. Look forward to your thoughts, Laurie

1 Billion. Hmm, hope they go in the right places. Otherwise that's a lot of two-stroke fugging up the atmosphere as they all get chainsawed down again!

Good luck Rumple. I have gathered hornbeam seeds and acorns and am going to raise a forest in yoghurt tubs next spring. Only problem then will be finding a permanent home for them to grow to maturity. Lots of schemes around though that can help: Commom Ground, RSPB, Woodland Trust etc

You could be right Jazid. My three wishes: Ban chainsaws, mobile phones and aircraft.

Okay, hornbeam, I'll support you on the three bans, if you find good spots for your yoghurt forest. (Then can we cut down on yoghurt in plastic tubs - why not something more recyclable?)

Yoghurt pots are recyclable. They and lemonade bottles are recycled endlessly as carrier bags, fleece jackets, doormats etc. Just gotta stop people throwing everything in the dustbin. Seperate and recycle is the way foward. Not much we can do as individuals re global warming with developing countries, China and India churning out smoke and gases by the megatonne, but we can tidy up our local patches by minimising the need for local landfill sites.

I am busy growing some acorns, horse chestnuts, and chestnuts at the moment.I germinate them in water on top of my boiler first and then prick them out into three inch flower pots.I have a few trees already growing on our allotmment I planted out last year.

The council won't take our yogurt pots.If we put them out for recycling they chuck them out.

No offence HB but do you still fly off all round the world like you used to or have you seen the light and been grounded?

I find it really frustrating coming from a place where lots of plastic was recycled, to finding the same as Kandy - yoghurt pots, etc are rejected.

I bung yoggy pots in with the other plastic recyclables when I'm not using them to grow hornbeam forests. We hornbeams are intent on total world domination. Be warned!

Do I still fly around the world asks Kandy? No.

    Three reasons:
1 Seen it, done it, got all the T-shirts
2 Its rapidly all looking exactly the same everywhere
3 One person flying across the Atlantic contributes as much carbon as driving your car 10,000 miles.

Phew that's ok then for me only driving less than 2,000 miles per year. The only long journey I do in mine is over to our allotments and back,so hopefully I am not doing too much damage to the enviroment..
