Odd isn't it, but these slugs (Arion ater) are mostly red in the south and black in the north. Must be all those "dark Satanic mills"

That picture [on my 15" screen] is the size some of them really are in my garden- they vary from tiny to 5" when I fail to see how any frog or thrush could eat them. Mine are usually more beige coloured. They have a very thick sticky slime which I have to wash off after chucking them.
Not my favourite form of wildlife.

There are at least 10 different species of slugs found in Britain, but some are very local and only found in certain places. Some never come anywhere near gardens and of those that do, not all eat growing plants. Many eat dead vegetation, leaf litter and other slugs.

I must be one of few gardeners who actually likes Slugs and Snails, they are very interesting creatures...probably going to sound a bit strange but slugs mating is so fascinating, very clever creatures and as Hornbeam said their not all baddies [IMG]

Good for you, Poppy - let's hear it for the slugs [IMG] Early this morning, there was a convoy of bigguns crossing the wet lawn. I left them alone 'cos I can see absoluutely no sign of any damage. No seedlings chewed or holes in leaves. So they must be feeding on something else.

I don't kill them, and all living creatures are fascinating- those leopard slugs mating were quite beautiful, and snail shells are intricate works of art like all shells. I don't mind sharing the things I grow as without all the creatures nothing would grow, but I do get very exasperated and cross when nothing but a stump is left for me! :(

UGHHH!!!!!!! I just CAN'T do slugs at all!!!! [IMG]

but what was it that Bill Oddie said - "If they're black, put 'em back"....... its the black ones that eat the dead stuff - the other colours eat the live plants!!

Not quite true even if Mr Oddie says it. The slug in the photo is orange in the south and black in the north. Exactly the same species.

Its the little grey slugs that do the damaage - the ones you never notice.

I don't kill slugs and snails either. They tend not to live very well in the garden because I live near to the promenade.( I can see the illuminations from my house) There is a lot of natural salt here!!!!

But my allotment is another matter, it is a lot further inland, but I try to make use of natural predators to keep it all as organic as possible.

However it is not very pleasurable to find them on your lettuce, but it is only the grey ones that I find munching on my green stuff. Just like hornbeam says.

As GW says, the bigguns eat dog poo and clean the cat mess from my lawn. And all the time, you guys are poisoning nature's poo disposal operatives 'cos you think that they eat your plants. What injustice! ;)
