Onion Growing 2024

New season begins, just sowed three dozen each of White Sturon and Red Mammoth seeds in the heated propagator, we won't need any more as there's just 2 of us, hope they do as well as this seasons did.

 

Do you use lights over winter?

 

No just put the tray on a well lit window sill

 

First green loop appeared in the prop today, ten days is pretty quick.

 

I need to buy my seeds. Got Welsh onion seeds already, going to get zebrunne and those white Spanish ones for the others.

Hopefully won't need to buy sets this year like last time

 

Well the Sturon were a disaster, none showed so I did a second sowing, but with Red Baron as it was all I had, slightly over sowed to compensate and I now have dozens of 'em. Better than none, but will some white ones show through, who knows? I have at least one muck up each year, lets hope that's it for the year lol.

 

Hi, I am new to Onion growing
Last Autumn (2023) I planted some Senshyu sets outside, which are making progress.

This year I am thinking of Centurion (sets)
When would be a good time to plant these outside ?
I am in North/West England and will be planting them in plastic pots.
Any advice much appreciated

I plant sets in April also but I just plant them straight out about 2ins deep.
But I've only grown red barron in recent years.

 

Home bargains have sets of stuttgarter, centurion, Red Baron for 99p. 150g. Also a mix of Red Baron and sturon for 99p for 25. Incase anyone wants to try a few.

 

I noticed all the onions I attempted last year died at some point, just kinda wilted, except for a few I left in small pots: I checked on them tonight and while they were alive, there was something that had been nibling them profusely under the soil. I saw tiny orange cocoons. Is this onion fly? Are they just wandering about or were the seed onions contaminated?
Ive sown leek from actual seed this time, perhaps theyll have better luck.

 

This was back in late summer last year. The ones still alive along still were practically hollow :(
Yes I used sets last year but seed this year. Soil wasnt clean but never had onions in before, potatoes the year before.

ah the seed compost this year is new yes.
