Im trying onion plants this year. Mostly I sow seeds around xmas time but sometimes use sets but this year I thought plants may be a good idea. Anyone else done this? How do onions compare? Better than sets or not?

By plants I believe you mean growing from seed? You can get far more return and larger onions by sowing seed and transplanting when they get to the 'Crook stage'.

    Cheers, Tony.

I've gone on to using only seed grown plants these days.
I was getting far too many sets bolt around mid summer.

Having said that, for the first time in years I have bought a packet of red onion sets which said they were ideal for salads.

Hiya folks. No I actually mean buying onion PLANTS. Seed grown is definitely best. I've grown some very good onions this way but was too busy over xmas when traditionally I've sown them. I am hoping I will still get the benefit of seed sown without the hassle! Lazeeeeee, I guess

Verdun, this is being discussed on the Onion Competition thread,

    2013 Onion Growing Challenge

it doesn't look like anyone on GC is owning up to having bought plants, but the offer from D T Brown for 40 plants for £5.95 is an absolute bargain compared to how much I've already spent on seed, compost, heating and lighting since sowing mine just after christmas.
