Hi all; my red onion sets are growing away strongly, but some appear to have pushed up to the surface a little exposing the full 'set' with just the roots in the ground. Should I just leave them be or pull some soil round them....?

    Thanks

Often attributed to Birds mistaking the strands at the top of the set for a Worm - but I think birds are smarter than that!

If you push the set into the ground (rather than making a hole with a trowel), the soil under the Set is compacted a bit, and as they roots grow that can push the set out of the ground a bit. Push it back in to the desired planting depth.

It's caused by the roots pushing the bulb up, do as Kristen say, push them back into the soil, you may need to loosen the soil underneath with your fingers gently - careful not to break the new roots. It happens a lot, also cats/birds will pull up one or two which you can safely replant as soon as you notice them.

Better still, use a trowel when planting rather than pushing them into the soil in the first place.:dbgrtmb::dbgrtmb::D

I normally try to grow from seed, but this year I have very few to plant up. So, I've had to buy some sets which will be going in shortly. I HAVE used them in the past, and just pushed them in. Naturally, I'll use a different method this time :WINK1:
