It does depend where you are, I'm in Surrey and plan to get my onion sets planted out in the next couple of weeks, but further north you can wait till April. You need to make a nice seed bed for them and add some blood, fish and bone meal. Don't make the bed too 'fluffy', compact the soil after raking and bury the sets in neat rows (use a string or plank to get them straight) with the tops just showing above the soil. Make sure the fat end is down, so the roots are at the bottom (I sometimes get one or two upside down). Plant them about 6" apart in 6" rows.

Sometimes birds pull the sets up, but you can just replant them again.

    Don't plant in frosty weather.

For an earlier start cover the bed with fleece which warms up the soil and also stops birds pecking up the sets.

I planted my first container of Sturon sets yesterday Ryland , this is the earliest I have planted them - then again this is only my second year of planting onion sets
I will plant another container 4 weeks and another 4 weeks after that. Being in containers I can throw a net over the top until they start to keep the birds off. And as John said plant 'em fat end down :blue thumb:
