Do my over wintering onions need some sort of protections in the snow?

We're on our second lot of snow and it's just occured to me that they might be hardy but maybe not this hardy.

Without knowing how exposed your plot is or what kind of soil you've got, I'd say your overwintering onions should be OK just as they are. In fact, I'm not sure what kind of protection would be possible unless you had a lot of spare cloches. If you tried covering them with straw or fleece, you might do more harm than good by making them soggy.

I used to grow overwintering Japanese onions but found I had quite a few losses.

They're in good soil and hidden behind a compost bin there's only 30 or there abouts, Thanks Flinty

Onions are frost hardy. A covering of snow will help insulate the soil from frost thus benefitting the onions by keeping the roots that much warmer :)
