I had 50 Red Cross 'summer onions' sets free from Marshalls - planted in late September
    They are Red salad type.
They are all now about the size of an orange, and been given advice wait until the stalks turn yellow and fall over, then you can pick.
However noticed on several that they now have a seed pod growing at the end of the stalk ... do I need to cut off the pods ?

      Hi Sargan,

Thats a good size for this time of year, my autumn planted sets died in the snow.

The ones with the seed pods have "bolted" probably due to the dry weather, but you usually get a few that do that.

Best to use them first as the "pipe" that will now be up thru the middle of the onion wont store for very long, they tend to go moldy which can spread to the rest of the onion.

Wont make a lot of difference if you cut the top off.

Think I would be lifting them and using them right now, starting with the ones that have bolted.

Thanks ...I'll pull them as soon sss it stops raining.
I had 100% of them grow, even though they we're under snow for some of the time.
      Luck I guess.
