    Hi guys,

Ive sown some onion sets for the first time ever quite few weeks back now(stutgart giants).and wowowow they are growing, thing is its quite windy where I live being in Hull and not too far away from the river Humber so its windy a fair amount of the time, sadly I think just about every onion now has bent or creased stalks.Im totally gutted ,will this affect the growing of the onion,is there anything I need to do,can they be saved...........aside from the stalks being bent they look fairly healthy...........

I think your onions will be fine Smasher.
If it's permanently windy could you put a little wind break round them. Just about anything will do - some fleece, net, windbreak net kind of thing.

Hi smaher, onios are pretty fragile plants, mine often get flattened by animals playing about in my veggie plot, cats and rabbits knock them over but foxes are the worst, last year they rolled about and flatten the stems on most of mine. But they did recover eventually. I'd follow Alice;s advice and get some wind breaks set up. As a rough guide, for every 1 foot height of wind break you get protection for 10 foot distance.

It's best to work the chicken manure in before planting, right now I'd use a balanced general fertilizer on onions - something like growmore.

My "main" exhibition onions(Kelsae) grown in a raised bed have taken a real battering with the recent gales, my backup ones are doing nicely at ground level (and gonna stay there)

This time of year (Sorry JWK), onions are pretty hardy, I still expect my wind battered ones to out perform the others, I could be wrong though, quite often am :(
