onions

    I have found a small what i think is a flower head on one of my red baron onions.
    I planted them from sets on the last day of feb, i have pulled off the tiny head did i do right? and should i take them off if any more appear.

    That's what I used to do when I grew onions. Then give them a good drink. Bolting...or going to seed in onions, I was always told, is exacerbated by lack of water.

    Yes, and yes.

    Also, mark the plant (put a blank plastic label next to it, or tie something round it) and then use those first - the ones that have tried to flower won't keep.

    thanks redwing/kristen only one at the moment, a bit gutted really because october sewn seem to get a lot go to seed i started useing early sewn sets to eradicate the problem.
    Lets hope it's the only one

    Hi Micky. I've always found that onions grown from seed (in Jan) hardly, if ever, bolt. It seems it's a 'set' thing. Maybe try some from seed next year ?

    Hi freddie if you grow from seed in jan , at what stage and month do you set them out and do they get big enough by aug/sept

    Hi Micky. When the seedlings reach the 'crook' stage you can either pot hem up individually or put them in trays, maybe 28 to a tray. Then basically just look after them until around the start of April (when they should look like they're taking off) and plant them out. As for size, the biggest onions are grown from seed :thumb:
