Mrs H has been given a lovely purple orchid for her birthday. Now I know next to nothing about them. We have a shelf in a north facing kitchen , it would also be above a oven with a gas hob to the side , both used occasionally . Would this light level and infrequent blasts of heat be an Orchids nemesis ?
We have kept the same type of Orchid in the kitchen utility area on a east facing window , for about 4 years.

    TIA

Dont say what kind of orchid?

Dont think I'd put any plant above an oven or hob.

      It's a plastic one @pete .
I'll try and find the variety tomorrow. I do think the environment may be a tad hostile for most plants. Maybe some mares tail in a pot would survive ?

@pete , can't see a name on it . I think it may be a Phalaenopsis Orchid ? Photo shows it above the oven.

I would say it was a phalaenopsis, from the photo.

Silly way of asking, but would you keep butter on that surface? Or would it melt...?

          Good way of putting it;)

I'm tending to worry a bit about the light levels.

I do get what you mean Sian and pete :blue thumb: . The heat fluctuations and light levels are not ideal .We'll do the sensible thing and keep it on the window in the utility room, they thrive there.
