Hi I have recently moved into a house with a heated green house and am interested in growing organic cucumbers because my mum loves them.
Could you please let me know some basic stuff
How many cucumbers can one plant produce in a month
and what season could i have the plants producing cucumbers
    Grateful for any information Pete

      Hi Pete
Here's my tuppence worth. This year I grew two plants in our polytunnel and from late June to early November I was either composting or giving away several cucs each week. Over the past several years I been reducing the number of plants I grow year by year. I reckon we would have plenty from just one plant but I like to grow a second as 'insurance' against disease etc.
This year I sowed in a heated propagator on 17 April (maybe could have done it a week earlier) and planted out in the polytunnel 13th May. I didn't take a note of our first picking but think it was probably late June. The plants were still producing small cucs in early November when I pulled them out.
Plants per month? Well at a guess I'd say our two probably produced nearly 20pm at their peak.

I usually grow four cucumber plants in my greenhouse, last season only a couple actually produced fruits (the other two were a different variety that was too late maturing), I was picking at least one or two a day at their peak.

The successful variety I grew was Cucino F1, which is a small tasty one. Definitely go for an all female F1 variety, don't start too early in the season and sow a couple extra as insurance as cucumbers have a habit of suddenly dying overnight in their early stages.

          Welcome to GC Pete:dbgrtmb:

I've always grown 'Telegraph' cues that have always given a good crop, had ample fruits to keep and give away from 2 plants but have grown an extra couple for 'insurance' purposes. They do tend to succumb to mildew though so this last couple of years I tried 'Carmen F1' which I can definitely recommend as they don't seem to suffer as much with mildew:thumbsup:

Welcome to GC Pete. :blue thumb:

Like JWK, I've grown 'Cucino' cucumbers with some success. They're a very productive plant, producing lots of little 'bite size' cucumbers.
I also grow a variety called 'Passandra' which produces a medium length cucumber with a good flavour.

I usually sow one of each variety at a time, starting around early May and then sowing a couple more at fortnightly intervals from then on (you only get about 4 seeds in a packet).

There are always one or two failures (cucumbers are notoriously fussy plants), but those that do survive usually keep me supplied with cucumbers from about mid June until September.

As for numbers produced, I'd say (in a good year) each Cucino plant will probably produce up to a dozen cucumbers per week for about 4 to 6 weeks, while the larger Passandra will produce maybe 4 or 5 per week for around 6 to 8 weeks.
