Our Guide Dog Puppy

we have 10 week old Chip the guide dog puppy in our care for 12 -16 months,

i just have to share how sweet he is with you all!! and anyone who will listen!! lol :lollol:

Awww Nicola ,he is gorgeous ! (Can I also say I have the greatest admiration for the work & attention of guide dogs ,truly amazing what they do.)

 

Nicola, you are a special soul to help this way. I know the routine and how you have to give him up later for the guide society to continue training. It is a happy sad emotion. You are a treasure. And he looks so sweet.

Nice puppy, they do a really good job.

But I must admit, sometimes I do feel kinda sorry for guide dogs.
Its not much of a life for a dog, or is it?

 

I had the pleasure of adopting two German Shephards (separately) from the Seeing Eye Company in Morristown, NJ. USA when the first was 12 months and the second was 3 years. Both did not cut the mustard for the advance training for the blind and they then go on a waiting list for sighted people.
For a sighted person who does not have the time to go through puppy training (proper training that is) for a large dog they are perfect. When I got my first, Thompson, he and I went to obedience school so I could find out what he had learned so I did not screw him up. He was so good. For both they were first crated because it is a new house for them and franking Shephards are a little insecure in a new environment. I remember all the way home in the car with Thompson, he barely looked at me. Finally when we bonded, he brown eyes never left me. Thompson was a quiet serious dog, very calm, gave off the attitude that life just bored him. Kirby was our second one, got him when he was 3 years old, they said he was almost perfect but could not outgrow distractibility issues. I remember in my gardens when we would roam, he would know which flower just bloomed and stop to smell it. He was such a clown, full of passion and life. Both did not make it till 9 years old, Cancer got them. Its hard losing two great dogs in 14 years span of time. Maybe one day I will get another. The Seeing Eye people call me every now and then, they tell me, when I am ready, I don't have to wait, cause I am labeled a good mom on their computer.
The person I deal with shared with me the horrid stories of families/people who adopt such trained credible dogs and just tie them outside giving them no attention. Or just plunking them inside their home and expecting the dog suddenly "knows" what to do. And then complaining when the dogs not "perfect". Humans they need training.

 

Hi pete, I have to say I agree in a way with you, they dont get to have as much fun as my other dogs in the past have had...

simple things like we had a GSD previously and one of my favorite things in world was taking her for runs round the hay fields where we live, she just went banana's :luv: but we are not "allowed" to do this with chip.. he gets 3 free runs a week ( or will do after his injections) and the rest is road walking.. kinda boring for a dog i guess...

i know things like letting your dog on the sofa is not the best idea, but of an evening our GSD cuddled up at corner of the sofa, and thats the kind of companion we wanted.. part of the family..

Its certainly not a cruel life, but its not the most.. fun..

chip is too , but i have to say already at 14 weeks old he is better at some things that our old german shepherd ever was

Will you swap? My two for that little'un sounds fair to me.

Although my two could have been in Marley & Me as they are that mischievous.
