Grandson, no idea of age, but young. Presented with a copy of Grandad's latest book of stories. "I don't want this, it is just made up things. If I make up stories I get told off for not telling the truth."

PS. His favourite reading matter is the Tooled-Up catalogue.

A very metaphysical statement :hate-shocked: and quite hard to explain the difference between telling untruths and writing, or telling, stories to entertain.

Good luck with explaining the difference. :heehee:

P.S. I would love to discuss things with the lad as he's growing up. Minds like that can be developed to want to know answers and to help the expansion of knowledge.

This also brings to mind the validity, or not, of TV programmes such as the very recent one "Child Genius". Do you, or don't you, try to encourage and develop the minds and the seeking of knowledge of those that can and want to learn?

A very recent book has come out showing evidence (debatable) that IQ doesn't stop developing at age 18 (up to now that has been the accepted premise) but can be developed up to 10 points higher by active minds and, to a certain extent, bodies. Conversely, it can reduce by up to ten points. So a total difference of 20 points is a significant amount on the Cattell Culture Fair iii (a) scale and even on the Cattell iii (b) scale.

If I haven't lost all of you by now :heehee:, they also say that the average IQ has been rising by 3 points per decade since 1980.

The (b) test asks questions that are aimed are people who have been educated to Western standards and measures your ability to understand words and concepts and do some mathematical calculations. They're not too difficult until you realise that you have limited time in which to do them.

The Culture Fair (a) test doesn't rely on educational matters and is based on visual ideas.

Although measuring IQ bears some relevance to intelligence I argue that it actually tests how good you are at doing tests!! :noidea:

Sorry if I've not explained it well enough :rolleyespink: :)

I remember doing a series of tests at University when one of our Philosophy lecturers was doing his PhD thesis on IQ testing. Mine varied between 180 plus down to 96, depending on what kind of test it was. Pure memory got me a high score, having an eidetic memory (then, sadly gone now) and a Mathematics based one (Failed O' level maths 5 times) Still cannot do Arithmetic.

There is one thing we do from the millisecond before we are born and the milliseconds after our death, and that is, LEARN.
