HELP!! It appears since using the wifi here that our outlook account is being used by someone else according to Microsoft. We were contacted by someone back home saying they had some weird emails from us. We have been directed to a link to a questionaire to verify that it is our account but we are not sure whether it is Microsoft or a scam.
Does anyone know what we can/should do? resetting the password did nothing.

    Microsoft don't send emails! It's a scam.

Are you alledgedly sending emails that you are abroad and have been in an accident? It's a known scam. Don't use any link provided by the email or an questionaire, if you have you've probably just given a fake site that looks like outlook.com the access details to your account.

Open a new window and browse to hotmail.com and log in there, THEN change your password. An excellent method of checking if an email is genuine is to preview your mail via something like Mailwasher, think there is still a free option. Mailwasher shows you the actual destination of the links in emails and you might be surprised how many emails that look genuine are in fact spam.

By the way, just check on the hotmail/outlook site, there should be a green locked padlock showing in the URL box, or somewhere around the outside of your browser, this will signify that you are connected to a secure site, which is the norm for hotmail.com/outlook.com

Thanks for your reply (and my late one). The email was a legit Microsoft one requiring verification that we were who we were. No account numbers or anything like that were asked, just recent email addresses and subjects. After a lot of faffing about we did get back into our account but it has made us very wary now as this only happened while using wifi at a hotel.
