Hi. With early retirement just around the corner, I'm eventually going to have a bit of time to spend growing my own veg. However, my sadly neglected veg patch is completely overgrown with weeds and grass. What's the best way to prepare it for sowing?

      Hi

And welcome to the forum :sign0016:

A couple of things you could do is use old carpet to smoother the weeds or dig it all over and plant potatoes and nothing else and the the foliage will help smoother the weeds etc or hard part, dig and weed a small section at a time remove the grass roots as you go and any other weed root etc little and often it wont be such a chore.

Do you know which weeds it is overgrown with? Perennials? Annuals? Spruce has given you three good ideas to tackle them, although, if you go the potato route then that would restrict what else you could grow while you wait for them to smother your weeds.
Fastest route would be pulling/digging them all out.
How large is your "patch"? Which vegetables are you hoping to grow this year? Are there any that you could grow in a container until your patch is ready?
Wishing you all the best when you enter early retirement and with your vegetable patch

Another option is to spray with glyphosate, this will kill everything green down to the roots. Then after a few weeks you can dig all the dead weeds into the ground.

Thanks everyone for the advice. It's quite a small patch at the moment, with potential to get bigger if and when I choose. Probably around 3.5m x 1.5m.

Think I'll go down the pull-em-out route, as I'm hopefully going to be time-rich!
