    HI
I managed to save three very sick looking Heliconia "olympic Dream" plants from a local garden centre. It looks as if they have suffered a bit with the cold.

As they are rhizomatous do you think it would be possible to dry them out for the winter and then wake them up in the spring?

I have read that they love the sun and heat so that could be a problem in the spring so am wondering if maybe they arent worth all my efforts!!

Hi Wilroda, nice to see you... I have a couple of young ones but I am overwintering them in my green house which I try to keep at a min of 10c for my other tropicals.. if you can overwinter them frost free I think you may be in with a chance.... I always like a challenge though.. :)

Thanks for that! Do you think it would be best to cut them back and dry them? - it looks like they have been very wet.

I do love a challenge too.......

I am just letting mine die back as they dry out to just damp...
I shall then keep them like that , so I imagine they will die back a bit more.. Then come spring I shall re-pot mine & get them ready for the new season by trimming back any dead old growth then.......

Great - i will allow them to dry out and wake them up properly in the spring.

Will let you know how they get on!

My experience of Heliconias is not great but I think 10c is the minimum they should be overwintered and wet in winter, at that temperature or lower, would probably see them off.

THanks everyone, what I will do is pot one up in fresh compost and keep it indoors for the winter and the other I will dry out, keep indoors too and see how much I can save for the spring.

    I love a challenge!
