I'm trying to sort out an old overgrown and tired part of my garden. I've dug up some plants, split where appropriate, and potted them up. What I want to do is to have them for early next year and decide where I want to replant them (if at all). Plants I have are Monarda Didyma, Montebretia, Erigeron Azure Beauty and some other stuff most sturdy perennials.

Can I leave these in pots over the winter in a sheltered spot in the garden and they will be okay?
The only other thing I thought I could do is to sink them (in their pots) in a bit of a raised bed that is free until early spring.

    What do you think?

    Hello Fens

I think your plants will probably be fine in their pots if you can give them a sheltered spot. Unfortunately you can never be entirely sure that things will make it through the winter, but mostly they do. Obviously plants in pots are more vulnerable than plants in the ground, so if you have things that you really can't bear to lose, your idea of sinking them into a raised bed is a good one.

I think Claralou has said it all.

I keep loads of plants in pots over winter, with very little problem. Putting them next to the house gives them a fraction more heat. Or you could put them in a coldframe - just an piece of glass supported on old bricks. But I am sure outside will be fine.

Thanks for the advice both of you. Exactly what I wanted to hear as well!
