I have a wooden garden gate that has previously been painted/protected with cuprinol. I now want to paint it white. If I were to use a good quality primer, undercoat and gloss would this be ok or will the old redish woodstain still come through? Thanks guys.

My guess is that it will be necessary to have several coats, and make sure that the paint is perfectly dry in between.

I can but try I guess and see what happens. I have to say 'DRY' is not a word that springs to mind at present. Not here in Poole anyway!

      :) Hi Dave
I would use white Sadolin Superdeck a super water based paint gloss or satin ,no primer or undercoat needed, just a couple of coats.
      A bit expensive,but I can't recommend it enough.

:) I would be confident unless the the stain was very new,it seems to cover anything.

The last time I 'preserved' the gate was 12 months ago, so I guess it's fairly old/dry anyway?

I've just looked at the prices of this product. Maybe seems expensive at first,BUT, given the price of primer/undercoat etc..........seems cheap. Much cheaper than a new gate anyhow! Worth a try in my book, thanks guys for your opinions etc

I didn't realise Sadolin had gone down that road, Waterbased, Ugh.:D

My initial thoughts are, if it goes on fast it comes off fast.

But never tried the stuff so I'd better shut up.:)

I know what you're saying Roders.

At work now they only spray water based paint, they use a fancy rubbery type undercoat first.

Think its all about saving the world.:D

It looks ok when it leaves the place...........................

Good things about water based paint is low odour and easy to clean the brush, but that is the only good things about it.!!!

A little tip Val, stock up on oil based paint.

We have no end of problems with waterbased paint, main one being, the slightest amount of grease or silicon on the surface means no adhesion.
Even fingerprints can be a problem at times.

I'm not even allowed to use candle wax on the bottom of my planes, or grease or tallow on screws.

Might be a new era in paint finishes, but we now need a new era in actually producing the article that is to be painted.

Oh for a bit of lead primer.:D

Yes, things have moved on but that doesn't mean they have gotten better, in fact most things which you buy now if compared to what was available say 20 years ago is treetreetreetree !!! This isn't about "saving the World" it is about cost and the cheaper they can make it the better!!
