I have a very large pampass plant and was told that it needs heavy pruning, basically to the ground. Is this right and how long will it be before it is back up again.
    Thanks for any advice,
    Dave

The old way was to burn them back to ground level - but I think that was more to do with avoiding those sharp leaves. If you prune back please wear some heavy duty gloves.

Just check for hedgehogs living in at the base of it before you burn it down! They love making their nests in the bottom of them....

If you cut it back now it will grow again over the summer and you will have to cut it again next spring. Is that what you wanted to hear or were you hoping for a more long term trim?
