Can some experienced person please tell me if I should follow the instruction in my gardeners book and destroy or discard the pansies and other similar plants and replace each year or is it OK to let them grow on year by year? If this is not correct can you tell me why or what will happen anyway? Thank you

Pansies are fully hardy, and perennial, but most people treat them as annuals, or biennials, as they get very leggy very easily. If you want to keep them going, keep dead-heading and tidying.
As for others, well, it depends on what they are. I suspect you mean bedding plants, and they vary a lot. Many of them are annuals, so they won't be any use next year, and others, like busy lizzies, the non-hardy fuchsias and geraniums (the pelargonium - not the cranesbill), need to be taken in for the winter, as they're not hardy.

Hope that helps! If you want to know about any particular plant, just ask! :D
