Maidstone council have been given a lottery grant to improve Mote Park, its a place with a fair amount of history, and was once owned as an estate.

Any way, as someone thats used the place for about 40 yrs or more, (I can remember trying to walk across the lake there in 1963), I'm just wondering how much damage a council can do if given a few million.

Just a taste, a before and after shot of a small bit of the "improvements".
Am I just biased or does this look awful?
    This is the before.

You're right, Pete. It's awful. All it needs is a few flags and a couple of faux period buildings and it'll look just like one of those toy town Barratt estates.

Clare,we have the faux period buildings around Mote House, reminds me of a Disney idea of Olde England.

I was just thinking, streetlighting and unemptied litter bins was all that is missing from my picture.

It may be so people in wheel chairs don't get "stuck" in the grass, looks like fun going down, but not up. Also there are no passing spaces or the path is too narrow.

          Its about 7ft wide watergarden.
Due to there being a Roman road there, they were made to build the tarmac on top, and not allowed to dig out like they have in the rest of the park.

I'm just wondering if in a thousand years time they will avoid digging there because there is some 21st century tarmac below the surface.:D

Looks like a waste of money. Its all the rage right now, a new 'country park' near my work has a few pointless tarmac paths, I guess it will provide a nice little earner for the contractor in the future keeping the weeds down in the path.

There seems to be this idea that you shouldn't have to get muddy when you're out for a walk. Soon, they'll be putting in covered walkways so that you don't have to worry about the odd shower, either.

Maidstrone could do with a music festival.

Your park looks perfect fora bit of Gogol Bordello!

I'll have you know that Madogna graced the park with her presence a few years back!

Is that Madonna Clare or some strange person from way back when the Roman road was still in use?
We did have some radio one show there a couple of years ago.

Dont think smilie milie showed up though.:loll:

Its having the parking updated as well catstail, but as "Maidstone council planning" is an oxymoron, there is almost nowhere to park right now.

The main car park has been dug up and the so called hub car parks are yet to be built.

Yes, Google says it was the Radio One event. Didnt she stay for tea?
Bet Rio didnt have a patch on Maidstone.

So there you go Pete, there is a precedent! 40 or 50,000 young folks singing and dancing one weekend every year will enliven your Park up no end!
