I've grown parsnips for the first time this year, and whilst I realise that they aren't supposed to be ready yet, I decided to lift one today to check on growth etc, and was shocked to see that it was longer and wider than my forearm. If they are this size already, are they likely to get any bigger, and being that size, aren't they just going to become horrid and wooden in texture?:what:

Blimey! Yes I believe they will get bigger. I've noticed mine have the biggest leaves ever, and scooped the soil away to gauge what's underneath, but didn't pull one up. It must be ideal growing conditions this season for parsnips. Wait till the first frost and try them then, they will get sweeter and think they won't be woody.

They'll be fine well into next year if left in the ground. As John said though, you have to let them get a good frost to get the gorgeous taste!
