    :) Evening folk.

I have hmmm'd and haaa'd about where to put this question and have settled here because I live with these sorts of plants .... so forgive me if I'm in the wrong place.

I have a Myoporum tree (not something many or any of you have) .... here are some pics taken of it in the Spring (because it's too grey and windy to take a pic now) ....

It's a very quick-growing tree, evergreen and 'loose leafed' ie not dense .... I bought at perhaps 18 inches tall three years ago, it is now some 15 or more feet tall and I park my car under it .... it's grown a lot since the Spring too. In the Winter/Spring it is covered in tiny white flowers then black berries .... not good for the car because the birds are attracted to it .... say no more!

My sister (Kedi-Gato) brought me down a red Passion Flower and I unfortunately have nowhere to plant it. Last year I planted a Gloriosa at the base of this tree as I read they liked to grow through trees but it got neglected when I had builders here and I sadly lost it and haven't seen another for sale since.

Question ..... do you think the Passion Flower would live in this tree? I know some climbers strangle trees and others cover the canopy so no sunlight gets through.

Your thoughts and ideas would be greatly appreciated as I need to do something with the Passion Flower soon.

    Many thanks in advance.

    :)

    Red passion flower?

    Do we know which one.
Not that I know much about how they would grow in Portugal.

    But there are a few.

Just a thought but, Gloriosa dies down in dry conditions and waits for rain.

:) Evening FANCY and pete ..... thanks for answering both of you and discussing things amongst yourselves as we do ....

This Passion Flower Sis took a cutting of from Algoz just up from the Post Office ... as both of you know the small town where I have a post office box 6kms from me. She took it back Germany and grew it on and now can't cope with it so has brought it back to it's homeland .... here's a pic she put up of it last year ....

In reality here it's quite red but Kedi's is quite dark pink .....

By the way pete ... in the thread I found the above pic, I saw the picture of your P alata ... my neighbour has one and I am trying to root a cutting and heaven only knows where I will put that should it root but it's such a stunner! Besides that, my cousin's wife (they are here at the moment also with Sis and b-in-law) and taken cuttings of the P violacea (sp?) outside their hotel balcony for me ... I did tell her I can buy that one a meter tall and very full and healthy for a fiver here as they are sort of common here ...... :)

The Gloriosa died a thousand deaths pete and there were three shootsn at least six feet tall .... believe me .... it has not resurrected itself ..... :(

Lol, I can't see why not, unless it is evergreen it (passiflora) shouldn't block out the light. They can be pruned if they become unruly.:)

Thanks strongy, I think I'll have a go and plant it about a foot away from the tree. It's touch and go with Passion Flowers being evergreen here, half and half actually. :)

We have a disasterous problem at the moment where that horrid P caerulea is shooting up all over hell's half acre and I disccovered one coming up virtually side by side like twins with the lime tree and was up and away in the Solanum (which I was cutting back which is how I discovered it) and at least ten foot tall .... this is within a couple of weeks! I hesitate to use Tumbleweed on it as I fear it may affect the lime tree which is doing really well and is currtly covered in blooms and limelets and well as this years ripening limes. But I did read on the net about covering the offending vine with clingfilm and letting it bake and rot and die back in the heat ....which perhaps I could do but now is not the best time for us either ......

As to planting it to ramble through a shrub or tree, the only reservation I would have depends on how rampant that particular passiflora is.

If it grows anything like caerulea then I would say no way, but if its a bit less rampant, then maybe OK.

I have a caerulea that has escaped this summer and is half way into completely covering my large acacia, I know you can prune them back, but they attach tendrils to every stem on the other plant making removal a long job.

Thank you for responding FANCY, pete and strong but I have now resolved the above problem by purchasing another Gloriosa today .... :thumb::D

.... now the problem is where to plant the Passiflora. :dh:

All I can say about the Passion Flower pete is that is has taken over a conifer, along with a Morning Glory in our nearby town ... but it's been there as many years as I can remember and never pruned back. I think P caeruleas should be banned as an 'invasive weed' .... besides my problem my sister has it coming up all over their conservatory as their floor is laid on earth. s00k
