I want to make a path around the edge of the lawn. The path will not be straight because I'm not a fan of straight lines in a garden. Although around the edge of the lawn, the kids will run across it because there are 'secret ways' all around the lawn, like the willow complex, and a stepping stone path hidden in shrubbery.

The lawn is quite small. About 15 ft squared, except it isn't square (cos I don't like straight lines).

So any ideas what I should use for the path surface and edging?

I'm on an extremely tight budget, so scroungeable/salvageable materials would be the best choice.

I want it to be such that if the kids fall on it, it will be no worse than if they'd fallen on the lawn.

It has to be pleasant to walk on in winter when the ground is damp.

I'd like to simply use sand, but I think that would be too attractive to cats.

    Any thoughts?

If you want it so that the kids will not hurt themselves, I would suggest woodchips or bark possibly shingle.

Bark chippings maybe? Or do you have anywhere that could do you some shredded tyres?

What do they use in national parks and such? Is it dolomite?

Maybe, but I would have thought that Dolomite would dissolve too quickly...
